Then there is quantum causality, another favorite for misinterpretation by New Age wishful thinkers.
The world is a playing field of Shiva – Shakti. The author makes it not merely understandable, but quite interesting.
Pagels’ work in chaos theory provided the inspiration for the character of Ian Malcolm in Michael Crichton ‘s novel Jurassic Park. In lieu of an ocsmic, here is a brief excerpt of the content: The capacity to tolerate complexity and welcome contradiction, not the need for simplicity and certainty, is the attribute of an explorer.
Subatomic particles like electrons, protons, light quanta, and quarks are mostly marked by their adherence to the “weird” to us rules, but even they can follow classic rules for many ordinary purposes. Pagels was an outspoken critic of those he believed misrepresented the discoveries and ideas of science to promote mysticism and pseudoscience. Not the math, just the concepts facing phys I love this book to the point of sentimentality.

And, ironically, because of our capacity for imperfection and error we are free beingsāa freedom that no stone or animal can enjoy. I hope to write a series of articles on my philosophy and religion pages based on some of the contents.
The Cosmic Code: Quantum Physics as the Language of Nature
The triumphs of the theory have overcome much of the initial disbelief and opposition to its new and peculiar view of physical reality; but at the same time a great amount of confusion, complexity and doubt about the possibility of a unified view of nature has resulted.
To those of a more philosophic bent who seek explanations, Dr Pagels’ wholehearted advocacy of the current world view of subatomic physics leaves the reader somewhat unsettled. Without the possibility of error and real indeterminacy implied by the quantum theory, human liberty is meaningless. Published both in hardcover and paperback, The Cosmic Code is a history of the new quantum ideas as they have historically evolved since the s. Clear, light on the maths, good analogies for the more mind-bending concepts.
The spectacular world of microcosmos consisting of proton, positron, electron, gluon, lepton, hadron, neutrino, quarks so on and on Dr Pagels accepts the conclusions of this new state of the world and its “quantum weirdness” with the enthusiasm of a professional man of science.
No trivia or quizzes yet. Tetsuro rated it it was amazing Oct 27, Is God a Geometer? Here I will briefly develop a couple of points that I hope will convince you to read this book. Even atoms, small as they are, are at the border of the quantum effects level.
This leads to an interesting statement by Pagels at the end of chapter 8: Reuben rated it it was amazing Jan 19, And yet persons seeking advanced degress in quantum physics will also find it useful both for learning the science cosjic for thinking clearly about philosophy. Written in the mids and stands as a solid popular science book on 20th-century physics.

Despite being written inthis book is a wonderful non-mathematical introduction to Quantum Theory for the layperson. But our capacity for survival must come from reason and knowledge.
Those interested in the history and broad implications of a revolutionary new view of the microworld will find in this book a wellwritten and absorbing text. Quantum pavels replaces this view of reality with one that says there is a statistical probability for events rather than a predetermined one.

Copthorne Macdonald – – Zygon 29 2: He died in while mountain climbing. Anecdotes from the personal documents of Einstein, Oppenheimer, Bohr, and Planck offer intimate glimpses of the scientists whose work forever changed the world. I have read a lot of physics books in the meantime but I finally got around to the book he recommended.
