Salah left his girlfriend Zeinab to immigrate to America in the 70’s however his marriage with his American wife faces problems. Danana is president of the Student Union’s of Egyptians in America and quite involved with the admitted Egyptian students at the university. Yet Al Aswany has his own magic. The city saw tragedy again with the fire ofand the subsequent ability of the “Second City” to reinvent itself mirrors the cyicago of many Americans who first arrive from elsewhere. In the mix of characters living in the building one found, for instance, an extravagant playboy, a gay intellectual, and a devout Islamic fundamentalist.
